The Divemaster course is a next step for advanced divers aspiring to enter the professional scuba diving industry. It provides the training and skills needed to lead dives, manage safety, and oversee dive site operations.Through in-depth training, you’ll gain expertise in diving physics and physiology, risk management, and leadership techniques. 

The course focuses on essential skills such as dive planning, emergency response, and group management, ensuring you’re prepared to oversee safe and enjoyable diving activities. You’ll also build leadership abilities, enabling you to guide and support other divers effectively.

With Divemaster certification, you’ll be qualified to lead dives, assist instructors in scuba courses, and inspire others to explore the underwater world.

The Divemaster course combines online learning with intensive in-water training, requiring strong physical fitness and mastery of diving skills in various conditions. You’ll develop leadership abilities, group management techniques, and problem-solving skills through hands-on scenarios, preparing you to excel as a capable and confident Divemaster.

Course Duration

The minimum course duration for the divemaster course consists of

  • A minimum of 40 hours; a minimum of 30 hours under the direct supervision of the SDI Instructor.

  • Ten open water dives of minimum 20 minutes
  • Confined water sessions

Extra training

If the course cannot be completed within the dives planned and further training is deemed necessary we offer additional training. The costs for this are €150,- per extra day of training.

Standards and Procedures

Course prerequisites

  • Minimum age of 18 years old
  • Certified SDI Advanced Adventure Diver or equivalent; advanced certification must include verifiable experience in deep, navigation, night, and limited visibility specialties.
  • Certified SDI Rescue Diver or equivalent.
  • Provide proof of current First Response Adult and Child Emergency Care Provider and Oxygen Administration Provider (where local law permits) certification or equivalent.(unless combined with the divemaster course)
  • Provide proof of at least 40 logged dives (see 3.11 for number of dives/hours required for graduation).

Minimum completion requirements

Satisfactorily complete the SDI Divemaster written examination, or online version with a minimum score of 80% and 100% remediation.
Give a minimum of 5 briefs and debriefs.
Show preparation, planning, and control in dive management and diving activities.
Guide a minimum of 4 dives with varying sites and environmental conditions.
Demonstrate all skills from the Open Water Scuba Diver course while neutrally buoyant.
Demonstrate the ability to solve in-water and out-of-water diver problems.
Demonstrate mature and sound judgment concerning dive planning and execution.
Operate as a Divemaster in a wide variety of environments.
800m swim with mask, snorkel, and fins non-stop without the use of arms in less than 17 minutes.
400m swim on the surface, non-stop, any stroke, without the use of swimming aids; swim goggles permitted.
In water, transport a simulated tired diver at a quick pace for 4 minutes.
Demonstrate a complete rescue scenario satisfactorily.
Perform underwater skills with and without a mask.
Swim on the surface, in full scuba equipment, using the snorkel, 100m.
Bring a diver, simulating unconsciousness, up from depth, not greater than 6m; at the surface swim them 100m in less than 4 minutes.
Satisfactorily complete all confined water skills.
Satisfactorily complete all open water skills.
Students must demonstrate all the skills required in previous courses at divemaster quality in leadership level equipment.
Students must practice and demonstrate, at DM quality, the use of a surface marker buoy (SMB) delayed or permanent.
Students must prepare an Emergency Action Plan for a dive site.
Students must prepare or draw a site map showing entry/exit point and key features.
Upon successful completion of the dives, students must complete their logbooks and the instructor must sign off on the completed dives.
